asecos publishes guide to lithium-ion battery safety for healthcare settings

06 July 2026

THE LATEST guidance document produced by asecos has been published to help healthcare sector professionals manage the various risks posed by lithium-ion batteries and protect patient safety.

Addressing the wide range of lithium battery usage in the healthcare environment for medical equipment, mobility aids and cleaning robots, the guidance document explains the unique set of fire risks involved with lithium-ion batteries and provides practical advice on managing them safely.

The need for guidance is increasing as UK Fire and Rescue Services are now tackling at least three lithium-ion battery fires every day. That’s according to research conducted by business insurer QBE.

asecos’ guide offers a practical checklist based on risk, containment and operating procedures in order to protect people.

Complex challenges

Les Day, commercial director at asecos, informed Fire Safety Matters: “Many healthcare sector organisations are developing procedures for safely charging, storing and managing lithium batteries. Fires involving these batteries create their own oxygen, quickly release toxic gases and potentially cause explosions. This can present complex challenges for staff at hospitals, care homes and healthcare facilities who must maintain patient safety and continuity of care.”

Day added: “The greatest lithium-ion battery risk tends to come from small devices put on charge and then left unattended. Even small battery incidents can cause operational problems. Our new guide offers practical advice to avoid any unnecessary disruption.”
