asecos White Paper brings “urgent clarity” on lithium-ion battery fire safety

01 December 2025

RESPONDING TO growing requests from safety professionals for clarity on the fast-emerging risks linked to lithium-ion batteries in the workplace, asecos has issued a new White Paper entitled ‘Lithium-ion Batteries: Fire, Explosion and Smoke Hazards You Must Address’.

The document summarises emerging workplace risks linked to thermal runaway and highlights the marked rise in lithium-ion battery fires, with UK Fire and Rescue Services now attending at least three such incidents every day.

The White Paper outlines the legal frameworks that already apply to lithium-ion battery management – including the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – and explains how they shape the requirements for risk assessment and hazard control.

In order to support organisations working through these obligations, the White Paper covers the legal risks of failing to take the protective measures increasingly required by regulators and insurers. Further, it sets out practical steps to meet the ‘gold standard’ of lithium-ion battery safety.

The White Paper also highlights asecos’ free site surveys and the company’s Derby showroom, while also outlining the annual maintenance plans that are available. The company offers practical support to help organisations stay safe, compliant and insured.

asecos specialises in hazardous materials storage solutions (the ION-LINE cabinet series is pictured above).

Les Day, commercial director for asecos in the UK, commented: “The lithium-ion battery revolution has undoubtedly transformed how we work, but it has also created a complex and fast-evolving safety challenge. This new White Paper offers practising professionals the evidence, legal clarity and technical guidance required for them to act decisively before an incident occurs.”
