The Royal Ship Hotel benefits from complete fire alarm system upgrade

19 February 2025

THE ROYAL Ship Hotel has recently undergone a complete upgrade of its fire alarm system, all without any disruption to day-to-day operations and losing any revenue. The establishment is a Grade II-listed, 19th Century coaching inn situated in the heart of the old market town of Dolgellau, which is near Snowdonia National Park.

Hyfire partner organisation Fire Queen Limited was asked to provide a quotation for a wireless fire alarm system as part of a ‘replacement and conversion’ programme. The customer was adamant that there must be no loss of revenue or disruption caused to normal operations during the installation.

System amendment

The building’s previous fire alarm system was initially an older Hyfire wireless system combined with a Hyfire hard-wired solution. Both had been installed separately at different dates and had individual fire panels, which were linked together. Across the last 15 years, the systems had been amended several times, while numerous devices had been replaced and various renovations to the property carried out.

Essentially, the mixture of equipment with different ages and conditions mean that age-related faults were beginning to develop. Further, the building’s layout had changed many times throughout the years. The combination of these factors, along with having two separate fire panels in two different locations, was becoming frustrating and confusing for the team at the premises.

All of the wireless equipment required upgrading due to its age. Understandably, the end client didn’t want to lose revenue from the 21 rooms on offer to paying guests.

Plan for the project

Fire Queen Limited’s team set to work on putting a plan in place and confirming the radio signal strengths throughout the building, which is a vital part of the install due to the thickness of the walls in historic buildings. Once satisfied with the signal strengths and equipment locations, the team could commence with the works.

Team members liaised with the management of the premises to ascertain room bookings such that they could then arrange the schedule of works. Once confirmed, the installation process was planned around the occupancy schedule to ensure no loss of fire protection or revenue.

If it had been a hard-wired installation, the installation process would have taken around six weeks to complete, including the aesthetic aspect. However, with some works transacted in-house prior to attendance, the project took only one week on-site to complete without affecting decoration.

The Hyfire Taurus range combined with Advanced’s MxPro 5 fire panel is the perfect dual solution for this project. The combination provides a proven robust and fully addressable, reliable and user-friendly system.

Efficient programme

A spokesperson for Fire Queen Limited commented: “The end client was extremely pleased with the rapidity and efficiency of the installation programme. Thanks to Hyfire’s innovative devices, the whole installation was smooth and did not lead to disruption of any kind.”
