New appointments strengthen ASFP’s technical and training capability
19 January 2026
THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has announced the appointment of Nathan Hassall as training officer and Akim Makumbi in the role of technical associate, further strengthening the organisation’s commitment to excellence, competence and Best Practice across the passive fire protection sector.

These appointments reflect the ASFP’s continued focus on supporting its members through high-quality training, robust technical guidance and industry leadership in the post-Grenfell landscape.
Nathan Hassall brings over a decade’s worth of industry experience across site-based and management roles. Beginning his career as an apprentice carpenter more than ten years ago, Hassall has spent the last five years working in construction management, affording him a strong practical understanding of the challenges faced by contractors, installers and duty holders alike.
“I’m thrilled to join the ASFP,” stated Hassall. “My goal is to support individuals and organisations in navigating the complexities of our industry by promoting clarity and Best Practice. I look forward to delivering our core curriculum, while also developing and refining new courses to ensure that our training always remains world-class.”
Hassall added: “I would like to thank the ASFP for this opportunity and my professional network for their ongoing support. I’m excited to play an active role in the future growth and success of the passive fire protection sector.”
Specialist guidance
Akim Makumbi will actively support ASFP membership events and technical groups with specialist guidance in passive fire protection and fire protection engineering.
Makumbi brings professional experience gained from roles across the intumescent and protective coatings sector, construction, project management and mechanical engineering. His focus will be on technical compliance, quality assurance and supporting industry alignment with recognised standards and Best Practice.
“I’m excited to join the ASFP,” enthused Makumbi. “My core mission in this new chapter is to help bring more awareness and bridge the technical skills gaps with other niche and innovative industries in line with fire engineering products and systems, construction, quality assurance and compliance.”
Taken together, these appointments enhance the ASFP’s ability to support members through both technical leadership and practical, high-quality training. With strengthened resources across its technical and training functions, the ASFP continues to play a vital role in raising standards, improving competence and supporting a safer built environment.
