ASFP advances key projects and expands international presence
19 July 2025
THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) is actively progressing a wide range of initiatives aimed at strengthening industry competence, enhancing technical resources and expanding global influence.

At present, the ASFP’s Council is overseeing several upcoming publications, including updates to the Grey Book Volume 1 and advisory notes on self-drilling metal screws and intumescent coatings. A future advisory note on non-combustibility is also under review.
What’s more, a comprehensive log of all ASFP publications is being developed to track progress. Additionally, Council is exploring the potential of creating a dedicated data repository for passive fire protection products.
Meanwhile, the ASFP has confirmed its participation in Intersec Dubai 2026, securing a dedicated pavilion near the Fire Safety Theatre. The Association will lead a day of presentations promoting the professionalisation of passive fire protection and plans to produce a show brochure and multimedia coverage to highlight member involvement. This initiative supports the ASFP’s strategy to grow its international profile and explore global collaboration opportunities.
System upgrades
Following a successful ISO 9001 audit, the ASFP is preparing for expanded audit requirements in 2026. Work continues on the Enterprise Architecture project, with CRM and website system upgrades in progress. Additional First Aid training is being planned in order to support the increasing number of Academy-focused events.
In parallel, the ASFP is advancing its competence framework, with updated documents for Design and Specification, Sales and Distribution and Installation expected later this year. These standards will align with industry Best Practice and will be endorsed by the ASFP. New training courses are also in development to address gaps and emerging needs.
The ASFP is in early talks with Skills for Justice Awards to create an independent assessment service aimed at providing credible and impartial evidence of competence in the passive fire protection sector. Plans for the first qualification will focus on design and specification, with additional assessments in the pipeline for sales and distribution.
Training expansion
The ASFP’s training offer continues to grow with the recent launch of the BSA Awareness Course and the upcoming Design Awareness and Sales and Distribution courses. A refreshed training structure now includes Awareness, Introduction, Diploma and Foundation levels. The ASFP has ended its training recognition agreement with the Institution of Fire Engineers and is exploring additional funding options to support member training.
The ASFP is working to establish an Irish counterpart to its Passive Fire Knowledge Group and is promoting the adoption of the Conflict Avoidance Pledge among contractor members. The Young Leaders Group is also actively contributing to ASFP projects.
