ASFP promotes passive fire protection message at London Build Expo 2023
20 November 2023
THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), the UK’s leading Trade Association focused on passive fire protection, exhibited on Stand H63 at London Build Expo 2023, which ran at London’s Olympia on 15-16 November.

Members of the team showcased the ASFP’s range of technical guidance documents, member services and passive fire protection-centred training courses. The latter include classroom training and e-Learning options.
The organisation provided full details of its Foundation courses, which are available in the classroom or online format and enable learners to study towards the Institution of Fire Engineers’ Level 2 and Level 3 certificates in passive fire protection. Also highlighted was the new ASFP Fire Stopping for Installers course, which equips learners with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for installing different types of fire stopping products.
ASFP experts were available to discuss the latest regulatory developments and to answer all passive fire protection-related queries. An additional focus was the competence and professionalism of ASFP members. It’s mandatory for all ASFP member companies to demonstrate that a proportion of their employees have been suitably trained and/or have achieved appropriate passive fire protection qualifications, in turn providing assurance that they have the right skills, competence and professionalism for their roles.
Conference programme
ASFP representatives delivered presentations on the Fire Safety stage across both days of the show as part of the London Build Expo 2023 education programme.
At 1.00 pm on 15 November, ASFP managing director Mike Ward was joined by Kate Milford (director of Milford & Marah) to examine the Association’s work designed to both promote and improve competence across the passive fire protection sector.
The duo also launched the ASFP’s Competency Pathway: the Competence Framework. This provides a free library of information, bringing together definitions to provide a benchmark for competence for all passive fire protection-related activities.
The Competence Framework details activities specific to passive fire protection, presenting them in seven domains across the building lifecycle. For further information on the Competence Framework visit: https://asfp.org.uk/page/TheASFPCompetenceFramework
The ASFP’s input to conference continued at 1.00 pm on 16 November, when Dr Andrew Taylor (head of technical) and technical officer Stuart Southall explained in some detail the ASFP’s approach to the golden thread of information and digital data in general.
Enhanced understanding
Ultimately, the ASFP attended London Build Expo 2023 to help visitors gain a greater understanding of the essential role of passive fire protection within today’s built environment and offer easy access to advice, products, services and Best Practice in relation to ‘built-in’ fire protection.
Across the two days of the Expo, the Trade Association welcomed representatives from the construction, fire safety and building maintenance and management sectors to Stand H63, among them facilities managers, contractors, services installers, ‘Responsible Persons’ and fire system designers.
