ASFP launches all-new passive fire protection Level 2 award training

18 November 2024

THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has introduced hands-on classroom training that’s aligned with the new assessment structure for the Institution of Fire Engineers’ (IFE) Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection.

This intermediate-level course is designed for professionals in the passive fire protection industry who are looking to deepen their understanding of fire safety and fire science. It covers a comprehensive selection of passive fire protection systems essential for today’s fire safety professionals.

Arranged in four two-day units, each session is taught by an experienced ASFP fire protection expert, providing foundational knowledge and insights critical for those working in fire safety roles.

These in-depth units allow participants to focus on the topics most relevant to their career path or particular workplace needs. With the option to take one or multiple units, the courses prepare delegates to sit the IFE Level 2 award examinations for each unit.

Unit details

The four units cover key areas in passive fire protection as follows:

Unit 1 – Building structural frame and flame-retardant coatings

This covers the fire resistance of building structures, including the frame and any applied coatings. Candidates will learn about the different types of materials used in construction and how they contribute towards fire resistance

Unit 2 – Walls, floors, ceilings, and glazing

The focus here is on the fire performance of walls, floors, ceilings and glazing. Candidates will learn about the different types of materials used in these components and how they’re designed to resist fire spread

Unit 3 – Fire stopping, barriers, ductwork and dampers

This covers the use of fire stopping materials and systems to prevent the spread of fire through openings in walls, floors and ceilings

Unit 4 – Doors and shutters

Concentrates on the fire performance of doors and shutters. Candidates will learn about the different types of doors and shutters used in buildings and how they’re purpose-designed to resist fire spread

Each unit involves two full days of interactive lectures, enabling participants to learn from leading industry experts and develop practical skills that can be directly applied in their roles.

On completion of each unit, learners must successfully pass a 30-minute IFE examination in order to receive a Level 2 award. If all four units are passed within five years, the learner will be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection.

Cost and schedules

Each unit is priced at £440 for ASFP members, £630 for ASFP individual members and £640 for non-members.

The course is scheduled to run throughout 2025, with a range of dates available to accommodate busy schedules.
