Institution of Fire Engineers introduces ‘Leading Fire Safety’ strategy document
07 January 2025
THE INSTITUTION of Fire Engineers (IFE) has launched its new strategy document entitled ‘Leading Fire Safety’, which aims to inspire excellence through knowledge, professional standards and collaboration.

The strategy outlines the Institution’s long-term aim of putting its members at the heart of its purpose. As well as setting out the IFE’s priorities, the strategy empowers members to influence how fire safety is understood and managed, thereby ensuring they play a key role in driving necessary change.
Collaborative process
The new strategy was formulated following a membership survey and a series of engagement sessions held with members and external representatives.
Split over two phases, the strategy consultation process gathered feedback from around the world. Phase 1 witnessed the engagement sessions receiving upwards of 500 items of feedback and data from members and external organisations representing 25 different worldwide branches.
In the analysis process of the Phase 2 sessions, nearly 600 items of additional feedback and data were received from IFE members, further increasing the international representation to 32 different worldwide branches.
Strategic priorities
Following the consultation period, four key themes were written to encompass the findings and form the basis of the IFE’s strategy. These are skills, development and innovation, trust and reputation; organisational sustainability and engagement and, last but not least, global influence and advocacy.
The IFE’s CEO Steve Hamm commented: “We’re delighted to begin 2025 with the launch of our new strategy. This was a huge project for 2024, the end result of which will address the challenges our sector faces, from climate change impacts and built environment developments through to diversity and inclusion challenges and on again to increased fire safety responsibilities.”
Hamm continued: “As the global professional body for fire safety, we will support our members in overcoming these challenges through communication, qualifications, learning opportunities and resources and also professional standards. We very much hope this strategy empowers them to navigate and influence our sector.”
In conclusion, Hamm stated: “With the strategy in place, we now turn our attentions towards its required outputs. Regular updates about the projects undertaken will be issued to the membership through the IFE’s established communication channels.”

Fire-safe future
Across the year, the IFE has led the way in enabling fire professions to become rigorously assessed through a well-established and dynamic system of internationally recognised membership grades and fire-related qualifications. Indeed, the IFE delivers more than 6,000 examinations each year.
Managed for fire professionals by fire professionals, the IFE aims to promote, encourage and improve the science, practice and professionalism of fire engineering, always acting as a beacon of established expertise and guiding the way towards a fire-safe future.
