Hyfire devices steer The Bristol Port Company towards enhanced fire safety

20 February 2024

UPWARDS OF 250 Taurus devices from wireless fire system supplier Hyfire have been installed to serve The Bristol Port Company’s office complex, in turn bolstering the organisation’s fire safety infrastructure to meet the highest standards.

The Bristol Port Company was formed in 1991 when entrepreneurs Terence Mordaunt and David Ord purchased the Port of Bristol from Bristol City Council. Since privatisation, more than £600 million has been invested to create a modern and thriving business offering the full range of shipping, distribution and logistics services.

Working with Astron Fire and Security, The Bristol Port Company recognised the need for a fire system designed to meet BS 5839-L2 standards and which could be installed rapidly, with minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of the office complex.

The primary challenge faced during installation was the presence of asbestos in the building, which would have made a wired approach not only more complex, but also significantly more costly due to the need for asbestos monitoring and removal, with the potential need to relocate staff and tenants.

Asbestos challenge

Simon van Laun, operations director at Astron Fire and Security, explained: “The challenge presented by The Bristol Port Company’s office complex wasn’t just about its scale, but also the presence of asbestos. Wired installations would not only have been hazardous, but would have also incurred a massive financial outlay. Turning to Hyfire’s Taurus wireless devices was the logical choice.”

He continued: “By harnessing this cutting-edge technology, we were able to efficiently tackle the issue head-on, ensuring that the building’s integrity remained uncompromised, while delivering a fire system that offers the highest level of monitoring and protection. This project underscores the adaptability and reliability that wireless devices offer in modern fire safety solutions.”

Rich Williams, regional sales manager for the South West at Hyfire, commented: “This project demonstrates the adaptability of Taurus wireless fire devices, and particularly so in complex environments. We’re extremely proud to see our devices play a key role in safeguarding what is such a significant commercial space, in parallel demonstrating the unmatched efficiency and reliability of wireless fire safety solutions.”

Top priority

Luke Nesbitt, LV team leader at The Bristol Port Company, concluded: “Ensuring the safety of our members of staff and the integrity of our infrastructure is paramount. In collaboration with Astron Fire and Security, and through the use of Hyfire’s advanced wireless technology, we’ve successfully enhanced the fire safety of our office complex with none of the typical challenges and disruptions associated with large-scale fire system installations.”
