Hyfire’s wireless Taurus devices used to safeguard major UK museum
19 July 2025
HISTORY IS not only the study of the past. It’s also a map for the future. With this in mind, Hyfire was recently handed the task of ensuring the safety of some of the world’s most precious artefacts by installing its Taurus wireless fire alarm system in one of the UK’s most important cultural institutions.

In 2023, the museum was the most visited attraction in the UK, with upwards of five million people in attendance across that year alone. Such sustained visitor footfall meant that installing the devices during the day couldn’t happen without shutting down huge areas of the building, disrupting many visitors’ experience.
In order to minimise disruption to daily operations, Square Mile Fire and Security (one of Hyfire’s installation partners) opted to carry out the work outside of normal operating hours, beginning at circa 11.00 pm and continuing through the night.
The project was overseen by Hyfire’s regional sales manager Gemma Hand, who explained: “The museum remained open throughout the installation period. One area was temporarily closed off to allow work to be carried out during the day, but no noisy tasks were performed while the museum was open.”
Navigating ancient artefacts
The real challenge, however, was navigating around ancient artefacts and structures. The museum is home to priceless relics, which required special protection during the installation.
As such, the team installed sensors to monitor vibrations in their vicinity. “If the sensors detected any vibration,” explained Hand, “work would immediately stop, allowing museum staff to inspect the artefact before we could proceed.”
The Taurus Wireless system “sets a new standard” for integrating heritage preservation with modern safety requirements. One key advantage is the system’s flexibility. Further, the system’s long operational life – of up to ten years on a single set of batteries for detectors and Call Points – significantly reduces maintenance demands, while ensuring continuous and reliable protection.
By implementing a hybrid fire detection system, the museum’s management team is safeguarding the historic building and the well-being of its artefacts.
