BAFE Fire Safety Register appoints new managing director
10 January 2022
SUBSEQUENT TO a thorough recruitment process, the BAFE Fire Safety Register has announced the appointment of Dr Justin Maltby-Smith CEng FIET CMgr FCMI as the organisation’s new managing director.
Since BAFE’s establishment back in 1984, and subsequent to the organisation going fully independent in 2009, the registration body has continued to enjoy a core role in establishing methods to evidence competency within the fire safety arena. With that desire comes the significant responsibility of always ensuring that the available portfolio of BAFE schemes consistently represents the highest echelon of competency for specific fire safety works.
Maltby-Smith joins the BAFE Fire Safety Register from his most recent role as technical scheme development manager at NAPIT and, prior to this, a long tenure at Certsure/NICEIC serving as head of schemes and operations.
Commenting on his appointment, Maltby-Smith told Fire Safety Matters: “This is a great time to be joining such a highly respected organisation. Stephen [Adams] has developed BAFE to become the quality standard within the fire safety industry. It’s a direction of travel with which I intend to continue, while also looking to expand on the organisation’s reach. Alongside BAFE’s quality team, I’ll be working on the further development of quantifying competency.”
Maltby-Smith concluded: “I’m excited for the next chapter of BAFE’s growth, knowing full well that we already have robust and long-standing foundations in place upon which to build.”
BAFE’s chair Douglas Barnett responded: “Justin will be a great addition to the BAFE team. The Board and I trust that he will lead the organisation in the right direction required. His knowledge and experience within both the UKAS-accredited third party certification and electrotechnical sectors brings a level of expertise that will be extremely valuable to the development and management of both new and existing competency schemes for the fire safety sector.”
Barnett added: “We must also extend huge thanks to BAFE Board member Lewis Ramsay who has been a crucial player in managing the business during this interim period. Lewis has been central to the delivery of services and schemes for our customers during the challenges of the pandemic.”
Maltby-Smith will begin his role as managing director of BAFE on Thursday 20 January 2022.
