Tall Building Fire Safety Network to run high-rise fire safety conference
02 May 2023
THE TALL Building Fire Safety Network, organiser of the popular International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference, will be running dedicated high-rise fire safety-focused conference sessions on 16, 17 and 18 May at London’s ExCeL.

Each day of this year’s International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference will feature topical discussion and debate linked to pressing subjects of key interest for today’s practising fire and building safety professionals.
*Tuesday 16 May 2023 – High-Rise Construction Fire Safety
*Wednesday 17 May – Green Fire Safety Issues
*Thursday 18 May – Crisis Management in High-Rise and Complex Buildings
High-Rise Construction Fire Safety Conference
Sessions will cover all issues connected with the management of fire risk and fire safety during all stages of construction for high-rise buildings.
Conference will consider the latest guidance in the UK and that produced on the international stage.
There’s going to be a keen focus on insurance requirements, while Case Studies of recent high-rise construction fires will also be examined in detail.
Confirmed sessions include the following presentations:
*Mark Cooper (regional safety lead, Wates Construction): ‘HSG 168: Fire Safety in Construction FPOCS V10 – What Has Changed?’
*Ray O’Brocki (Construction Fire Safety Coalition): ‘US Experience and NFPA 241’
*Tom Gilbert (head of fire, Lendlease): ‘Managing Fire Safety During the ‘Load Out’ Phase of High-Rise Construction’
Green Fire Safety Issues
Experts will discuss the rapid changes now taking place in order to make buildings ‘greener’ and the potential impact this exerts on fire safety risk. Sessions will focus on the themes of ‘green’ walls and roofs, electric cars and stored energy, photovoltaic panels and devices alongside new systems for cooling and shading buildings.
As the dual requirement for energy efficiency and carbon reduction drives innovation, it follows that practising fire safety and building safety professionals must be part of the debate and make sure they remain fully informed.
Confirmed sessions include the following presentations:
*Keynote by Professor Guillermo Rein (Imperial College, London): ‘Overview of the Fire Safety Challenges in Green Buildings and Sustainability’
*Professor Ed Galea (University of Greenwich): ‘Green Walls and Fire Safety’
*Simon Bate (Buro Happold): ‘Green Walls in High-Rise Structures: Sustainability Advantage or Safety Risk?’
Crisis Management in High-Rise and Complex Buildings
Discussions will centre on the need for robust response processes and procedures when crisis events occur. In modern and complex buildings, the evolving threat environment requires constant vigilance and assessment.
As criminals continue to act, and with extreme weather, civil unrest and unknown threats all emerging, security and building management teams must evolve their processes and plans.
Conference will draw upon the latest Best Practice examples of crisis management, while also exploring the Government’s proposed Martyn’s Law (ie The Protect Duty) that will make it a requirement to have a competent response process in place for publicly accessible buildings and locations.
Confirmed sessions include the following presentations:
*Keynote by Nick Aldworth (director of counter-terrorism and risk, Carlisle Support Services): ‘Martyn’s Law’
*Chris Phillips GCGI (managing director, IPPSO): ‘Martyn’s Law: Response and Solutions’
*Dr Aoife Hunt: ‘Crisis Management in Tall Buildings’
