Award-winning Fire Scrutineer service showcased by Global Technical Services
07 March 2023
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE-BASED Global Technical Services – the specialist fire safety and passive fire protection-focused division of the Global HSE Group – has produced a five-minute video on the role of The Fire Scrutineer. The Fire Scrutineer records and assesses all aspects of fire safety on a given project in order to show due diligence and provide evidential and auditable records for the O&M manuals.

In line with the proposed Independent Construction Assessor framework, Global Technical Services’ Fire Scrutineer role developed from Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building a Safer Future report. This highlighted the need for specialists – such as fire engineers, fire scrutineers and auditors – to complete inspections and provide support through the ‘golden thread’.
The Fire Scrutineer concentrates on the three gateways of a construction project: Stage One (Design), State Two (Construction) and Stage 3 (Pre-Occupation).
Stage One involves early engagement with architects and designers to review their specifications and fire strategies. This helps to prevent issues and conflicts in the construction stage. During Stage Two, regular inspections of workmanship are undertaken to ensure that installations are completed in line with designers’/architects’ details and installed as per manufacturers’ tested solutions.
Stage Three involves the review of all commissioning certificates. This ensures that everything is approved in time for pre-occupation fire risk assessment, along with all of the documentation required for regulations. This would then be handed over to the ‘Responsible Person’ after the building is complete.
Golden thread
Global Technical Services can provide specialist knowledge and support in all areas of fire safety. The ‘golden thread’ has been set out to ensure that each duty holder is managing the build correctly in order to move on to the next stage.
In essence, Global Technical Services offers support and guidance throughout the stages mentioned, thereby affording the client peace of mind that the appropriate steps are in place for full compliance.
