IFE imparts diversity message in National Apprenticeship Week 2024

WITH NATIONAL Apprenticeship Week 2024 running from 5-11 February, a recent poll conducted by The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has revealed that 57% of respondents believe there isn’t sufficient awareness of the diverse opportunities available across fire-related apprenticeships.
In another survey, 45% of respondents believe the diverse job roles available across the fire sector are not adequately represented in the current apprenticeship offer. According to the IFE, this statistic highlights “a crucial need” for increased visibility and understanding of the various paths available.
The IFE has announced its commitment to driving further vocational routes into the fire sector, recognising how the modern apprenticeship path is crucial in shaping the future of training within fire and other industries across the built environment.
As the UK celebrates the apprenticeship pathway, these study results shine a spotlight on the importance of developing apprenticeship programmes that comprehensively showcase the breadth of careers available within the fire sector.
Candidates who successfully complete their endpoint assessment for the Operational Firefighter course at the Fire Service College can now apply to attain Technician grade membership at the IFE. This recognises the two years of rigorous practical and theory-based studies that map to the competencies required.
During National Apprenticeship Week 2024, the IFE will raise awareness about diverse opportunities and constant learning, while also engaging in conversations designed to address existing perceptions about apprenticeships.
Advocating for diversity
IFE CEO Steve Hamm informed Fire Safety Matters: “The modern apprenticeship pathway not only ensures a more dynamic and inclusive workforce, but also actively encourages individuals from different backgrounds and experiences to contribute to the fire sector.”
Hamm continued: “As a professional body, it’s paramount that we advocate for diversity and support candidates in their professional development. Our vision of a fire sector enriched by a wide range of experiences and socio-economic backgrounds continues to drive our activity.”
To further support those starting out in a career in the fire sector, the IFE announced last year that it had made its Student membership free. Both IFE examination candidates and those individuals in fire-related studies are now entitled to Student membership, which then affords access to learning and knowledge resources and an international network of contacts to support their career. Student members
The IFE has set an ambitious goal for 2024. The organisation is striving to recruit 1,500 Student members as part of a strategic drive to support early career professionals in creating a well-rounded scope of the opportunities available within the fire sector.
The cornerstone of this initiative is to provide those pursuing fire-related study with unique access to critical materials, Continuing Professional Development opportunities and a global network of industry experts.
The commitment seeks to provide early career professionals with the tools they need to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the various options accessible in the dynamic fire sector.
Individuals pursuing firefighting studies benefit from free Student membership, which provide access to a wealth of resources that boost their educational experience. This includes cutting-edge research materials, industry journals and webinars designed to improve their understanding of the fire sector’s many facets.
The IFE’s commitment extends beyond resources by offering the provision of a worldwide networking platform. Early career professionals will have the opportunity to connect with industry experts from across the globe who can significantly impact their career paths.
As part of an ongoing effort, the IFE recognises a wide range of responsibilities in the fire sector from facility management through to front line work and conducting critical fire risk assessments. The purpose is to provide early career workers with the knowledge and insights they need to make educated career decisions.

IFE technical director Paul Trew noted: “Our pledge to attract 1,500 Student members demonstrates our dedication to building a vibrant and inclusive community of early career professionals in the fire sector. We hope to enrich early career opportunities, pave the way for a diverse workforce and provide a full outlook on what a career in the fire sector can offer.”
Ultimately, the IFE wants to build a pipeline of talent that not only fulfils the current needs of the fire sector, but also contributes to its ongoing evolution.
