Prestige heritage site Traquair House safeguarded by Hyfire

17 March 2025

TRAQUAIR HOUSE’S history is deeply rooted in that of Scotland and England, having been built less than 50 years after William the Conqueror established the Kingdom of England in 1066 AD. Hyfire was recently afforded the honour of safeguarding this historic building by installing Taurus devices at the 900-year-old heritage site.

Hyfire partner IQ Fire and Security meticulously planned the installation process to minimise disruption. The Hyfire team conducted a detailed survey of the property to identify optimal locations for detectors and control panels that would ensure comprehensive coverage while being discreet.

The installation was completed efficiently, with minimal impact on the daily operations of the house and its preservation efforts.

“When dealing with such a prestigious estate, it becomes a matter larger than just safeguarding the people and structure,” said a spokesperson for IQ Fire and Security. “Traquair House is home to priceless relics. Thanks to Hyfire’s wireless devices, we were able to install an impressive fire alarm system without jeopardising the building’s historical integrity.”

Preservation mission

Traquair House was gifted to the Stewarts in 1491. Since then, the building has remained inhabited, making it the oldest inhabited house in the country. The house isn’t just inhabited by people, though. It also hosts extraordinary artefacts. One of the jewels of Traquair House’s collection is the crib Mary Queen of Scots used to nurse King James I of England when he was an infant.

Given its age and historical significance, safeguarding the property with modern fire protection systems posed a unique challenge. The solution involved installing a state-of-the-art wireless fire system that would preserve the location’s integrity, while also providing robust protection.

Due to Traquair House’s historical significance, with its original features and delicate interiors presenting potential obstacles for traditional wired fire detection systems, the primary challenge was to integrate a fire safety solution that would not compromise the building’s aesthetics. The installation had to be unobtrusive, ensuring that the historical value of the property remained intact, while providing reliable and comprehensive fire detection coverage.

Hyfire was commissioned to design and implement a wireless fire detection system tailored to Traquair House’s unique requirements. Hyfire’s Taurus wireless system can be fully programmed and planned off-site, making the installation swift and non-intrusive. The IQ Fire and Security installation team worked closely with historical preservation experts to ensure that the system was integrated seamlessly with the existing structure and decor.

Cutting-edge protection

The successful installation of the wireless fire system at Traquair House underscores Hyfire’s expertise in providing cutting-edge fire protection solutions that respect and preserve historical integrity.

This project highlights the company’s ongoing commitment towards blending modern technology with heritage conservation, ensuring that even the most historic of properties can benefit from state-of-the-art safety measures.
