OFR Consultants unveils detail underpinning new heritage sector contracts

09 March 2022

OFR CONSULTANTS – an independent consultancy wholly dedicated to addressing fire safety challenges – has recently expanded its portfolio of renowned heritage projects across the country, working diligently with clients on the sensitive restoration of historic buildings.

In London, OFR Consultants is working with the management team at The National Gallery, with the former preparing the iconic Trafalgar Square-based location for its 200th Anniversary. OFR Consultants is advising on new fire strategies that will support and safeguard the visitor experience.

Further, the OFR Consultants Manchester team is working alongside Day Architectural Ltd’s professionals on the regeneration of the Citadels in the heart of Carlisle. This project is all about creating a new campus that will revitalise the historic site and be transformative for the character and status of not just Carlisle, but also the wider Borderlands area in Cumbria.

In Scotland, the Edinburgh-based practitioners from the business have been serving as part of the David Chipperfield-led design team which is transforming the historic Jenners department store in the capital city. The building resides on the famous Princes Street and dates back to 1838.

Developing sensitive solutions

Andy Passingham, director at OFR Consultants, said: “It’s an utter joy to work on renowned structures like these, collaborating with established architects and design teams to develop sensitive solutions for important historic structures.”

Passingham added: “There’s so much potential among our listed and heritage buildings in this country and it’s our role to apply fire engineering guidance that will allow them to be safely brought into use for a new generation of occupiers. We very much look forward to moving forward on these and, indeed, all of our new projects.”

The news emerges in the wake of OFR Consultants’ work on the Endeavour Penthouse Apartment at the Category B-listed, five-star Glenapp Castle Hotel. The building was completed last summer following an extensive £2 million refurbishment and is now open to guests.

Working on a new building in another historic setting, the OFR Consultants London team has provided fire engineering consultancy on the now completed Levine Building at Trinity College in Oxford. OFR Consultants worked on the designs alongside ADAM Architecture. The now complete building is a fully accessible and environmentally sustainable structure comprising state-of-the-art residential, teaching and learning facilities as well as green space and spaces for performances, events and conferences.

Diverse portfolio

OFR Consultants was founded in 2016 in Manchester and has since become one of the UK’s leading fire risk consultancies, employing more than 100 colleagues from over 20 countries. These colleagues help deliver on global projects across the UK and the whole world – from Antarctica to Egypt, Cuba and Sri Lanka.

Passingham went on to comment: “Across the board, we’re fortunate enough to work on a diverse range of international projects with a portfolio encompassing not only heritage sector projects, but also sports stadiums, residential buildings and most types of commercial structures.”

He concluded: “Our colleagues continue to excel, delivering great work that helps us in our mission to protect people, property and the environment.”

OFR Consultants’ mission is to continually explore the challenges that fire creates for clients and society, applying the best research, experience and diligence for effective and tailored solutions.
