Institution of Fire Engineers champions National Apprenticeship Week
09 February 2026
THE INSTITUTION of Fire Engineers (IFE) is championing National Apprenticeship Week 2026, which runs from 9-15 February, in turn raising awareness of the diverse opportunities available in the fire sector in order to open doors for aspiring fire professionals such that they can begin their journey.

Throughout the week, the IFE will spotlight apprentices from across the sector to share their experiences and outline how IFE Student membership has supported their development. Each day will focus on a different IFE resource – from Continuing Professional Development and events through to networking opportunities – and highlight a clear and supportive pathway to professional registration.
2026 marks the third year that the IFE has celebrated apprenticeships and the amazing impact they can have for everyone. By equipping and empowering individuals at every stage of their career, the IFE is helping to build a stronger profession and shape a shared vision of a safer world.
Undoubtedly, the development of future talent is absolutely key to advancing the profession of fire engineering.
Best of both worlds
Ellie Leadon, design engineer at BB7 and an IFE Student member, explained: “An apprenticeship offered me the best of both worlds: the chance to gain practical experience, while also allowing me to continue my studies and earn throughout the programme.”
Leadon continued: “The combination of working on live projects, learning directly from experienced peers, developing both technical and personal skills and gaining direct insight into the fire engineering industry ensured that an apprenticeship was the ideal route for me to gain experience and prepare for a long-term career.”
Advocating for diversity
IFE CEO Steve Hamm commented: “The IFE is proud to take part in this annual campaign and celebrate the talent of tomorrow. As a professional body, it’s paramount that we advocate for diversity and support individuals in their professional development. The modern apprenticeship pathway not only ensures a more dynamic and inclusive workforce, but also actively encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to contribute towards the fire sector.”
As well as supporting the National Apprenticeship Week campaign, the IFE has announced the return of its Graduate Lecture event: a one-day celebration of the next generation of fire engineering talent. To be held on 13 May at the University of Edinburgh, the event will showcase the latest research from graduates and provide ample networking opportunities for students to meet with employers from across the sector.
Elevate series
This year also sees the continuation of the Elevate webinar series: a free resource dedicated to educating early career professionals on an array of topics from across the sector.
