Fire Safety Matters Podcast – Episode 33

21 July 2023

THE THIRTY-third episode of the Fire Safety Matters Podcast is now live to view and available to download or stream for free. On this edition, Brian Sims (Editor of Fire Safety Matters) chats with Judith Schulz, a director – and fire safety engineering specialist – at consultant Arup, where she’s part of the leadership responsible for the UK fire team comprising upwards of 100 engineers and access consultants.

Judith joined Arup just over eleven years ago having served as a senior engineer at Holmes Fire and Safety from 2004 until 2008 and then spending just shy of four years at consultant Buro Happold in the role of associate.

The proud holder of qualifications from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Southampton and also the University of Cambridge, Judith has led the Fire Skills Learning Framework within Arup and overseen the creation of a two-year transition programme for new graduates joining Arup Fire such that they can become fire safety engineers.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important across all industries now. What does Judith feel are the key areas in which fire safety can improve its credentials in this area? Also, what material-based solutions does Judith believe will assist in meeting the core sustainability goals? Is it about doubling down on fire-resistant materials or perhaps looking elsewhere?

Further, Judith explains Arup’s work on ‘Safety Equity’ and outlines the biggest ‘blockers’ when it comes to the industry’s progression on inclusive fire safety and sustainability.

What does Judith believe (and hope) the fire safety industry will look like in, say, five-to-ten years’ time? Listen to Episode 33 and find out.

Industry news

As always, Brian and Mark join forces for a thorough analysis of the major news stories impacting the fire sector.

On this occasion, there’s the latest detail concerning the Government’s building remediation programme, industry statements from the Institution of Fire Engineers, BAFE and FireQual marking the sixth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower Tragedy and the announcement of a new chair and vice-chair at the Association for Specialist Fire Protection. In addition, there’s a review of the inaugural edition of Fire Safety Matters Live, the Fire and Security Matters Awards and a Special Commendation Award bestowed upon the magazine by the PPA.
