Guidance Note on BS 5839-1:2025 published by Fire Industry Association
23 June 2025
IN RESPONSE to significant industry developments and the successful conclusion of its national roadshow series and digital sessions, the Fire Industry Association (FIA) has announced the release of its official Guidance Note on the changes introduced in BS 5839-1:2025.

The FIA remains wholly committed to equipping sector professionals with expert-led and authoritative technical insights. This updated guidance reflects the newest revision of the British Standard for fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings and is a cornerstone document for system designers, installers, commissioners and maintainers.
Changes in BS 5839-1:2025?
The 2025 edition of the British Standard introduces impactful revisions that reshape fundamental aspects of fire alarm system design and compliance.
Key updates include:
*clearer system categorisation
*updated rules for detector placement and types
*enhanced documentation and maintenance guidance
*stronger focus on remote access and cyber security
Overall performance
The revisions aim to improve the overall performance of fire alarm systems and provide clearer guidance for fire safety professionals. The updates are driven by a focus on safety enhancements, particularly so in the wake of tragic fire incidents. The new British Standard emphasises faster emergency responses, including automatic fire alerts in certain scenarios and clear Zone Plans in multi-zone buildings.
The FIA’s new Guidance Note provides clear and practical explanations of what has changed and why and goes on to outline what the changes mean for those who are designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining fire alarm systems.
