FIA issues guidance for members on anti-static precautions relating to CIE

THE FIRE Industry Association (FIA) has published a new document entitled ‘Guidance on Anti-Static Precautions When Fitting Equipment to Control and Indicating Equipment’. The aim is to assist its members in mitigating the risks associated with electrostatic discharge when working with printed circuit board assemblies in control and indicating equipment (CIE).
Electrostatic discharge events can cause significant damage to sensitive electronic components within CIE, potentially compromising the safety and functionality of fire detection and alarm systems. This new guidance document provides clear and practical advice on how to safely handle and install printed circuit board assemblies, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent electrostatic discharge-related damage.
Key recommendations include using anti-static wrist straps, grounding techniques and proper handling and transportation methods for sensitive components.
The document also outlines steps to be taken before, during and after working inside CIE in order to maintain safety and equipment integrity.
