Matthew Warren appointed chief fire officer for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service
02 July 2024
A NEW chief fire officer for the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was officially appointed on 20 June by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority. Matthew Warren, who has been the Fire and Rescue Service’s deputy CEO since 2015, begins in post on 1 July.

Councillor Edna Murphy, chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority, said: “Matthew was the outstanding candidate in a robust and challenging process, which included interviews with members, the current leadership team and a panel of colleagues from across the organisation. The Fire Authority’s endorsement of the appointment panel’s unanimous recommendation is a tribute to Matthew’s outstanding qualities.”
With a background in finance and accountancy, Warren takes the role having worked for the Fire and Rescue Service since 2003 after joining from Cambridgeshire County Council. Since then, his roles have included head of finance and corporate development and director of resources. Warren has also taken on the additional roles of treasurer for the Fie Authority and chief financial officer for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.
Warren has been a key part of the Fire and Rescue Service’s senior leadership team with responsibility for developing and implementing strategy across the organisation, including the delivery of new flagship fire stations in Cambridge and Huntingdon. He has also spearheaded and championed the Fire and Rescue Service’s sustainability strategy.
In addition to being a chartered accountant, Warren has completed strategic incident command and emergency management qualifications. These allow him to provide support during operational incidents.
Commenting on his new role, Warren enthused: “I’m delighted to be offered the role of chief fire officer and look forward to continuing the fantastic journey we have been on over recent years. There’s a great team in place here with talented people right across the organisation. I’m confident we can continue to punch above our weight and perform to high standards.”
