House of Lords to debate Leaseholder Remediation (Building Safety) Bill

In essence, the Private Members’ Bill seeks to:

*extend protections for qualifying leaseholders from the costs of historical building safety failures

*place enforceable duties on freeholders and building owners to initiate and complete remediation works within prescribed timeframes

*provide leaseholders with rights to seek mandatory remediation orders where responsible parties fail to act

Commenting ahead of what is Second Reading of the Bill, Baroness Pinnock said: “This is a question of justice. Innocent leaseholders must not be paying the price for serious building defects where they live. Some of these defects were the result of deliberate actions by those responsible during construction, as the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Panel concluded.”

Baroness Pinnock added: “If accepted by the Government, this Bill will take a giant step in fully protecting leaseholders and requiring those who created the building safety issues to be responsible for the cost of remediation.”
