FireQual signals expansion for regulated fire safety qualifications
06 October 2025
FOLLOWING THE recent success of its competency-based qualifications – ie the FireQual Level 3 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Foundation), the FireQual Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Intermediate) and the FireQual Level 5 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Advanced) – FireQual (the specialist Awarding Organisation for the fire sector) is now moving forward with the next phase of regulated qualifications development.

Between now and January next year, FireQual will be rolling out new and updated qualifications, regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation, in order to support professionals who want to advance their careers and demonstrate recognised competence in fire safety.
FireQual’s Qualification Steering Group, which brings together sector stakeholders and Approved Training Centres, has led the redevelopment to ensure alignment with the latest standards and industry requirements.
New and updated qualifications
*FireQual Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens
*FireQual Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers (BS 5306) (aligned with BAFE SP101 Scheme requirements)
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting (BS 5266-1) (aligned with BAFE SP203-4 Scheme requirements)
In terms of the Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System Suite, there’s now updated content aligned with BS 5839-1:2025 and BAFE SP203-1 Scheme requirements, including the following:
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fundamentals of the Recommendations for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Non-Domestic Buildings
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fire Detection and Alarm Design Theory and Regulatory Requirements
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fire Detection and Alarm Installation Theory and Regulatory Requirements
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fire Detection and Alarm Commissioning Theory and Regulatory Requirements
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fire Detection and Alarm Maintenance Theory and Regulatory Requirements
*FireQual Level 3 Award in Fundamentals of the Recommendations for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Buildings
For candidates looking to start or continue with their career development, this will mean qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation, ensuring recognition and credibility. These qualifications provide quality evidence to support registration with relevant BAFE Schemes.
Direct input
The qualifications are designed with direct input from industry through the Qualification Steering Group, ensuring that the content is current, practical and aligned with regulations. They provide a clear route for professional development.
FireQual plans to roll-out this programme with the FireQual Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens, followed by the FireQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting (BS 5266-1) and the FireQual Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers (BS 5306) and, in tandem, the updated fire detection and alarm system suite.
FireQual remains wholly committed to providing high-quality and sector-driven qualifications that set the standard for competence in fire safety.
