FIA signals course collaboration with Tall Building Fire Safety Network
04 January 2022
THE FIRE Industry Association (FIA) has announced its collaboration with the Tall Building Fire Safety Network, in turn bringing =specialised training courses on fire safety in tall and high-risk structures to fruition for its dedicated membership.

The two courses are Tall Building Fire Safety Management (Mixed and Business Use) and Managing Fire Safety in Higher-Risk Buildings and the Role of the Building Safety Manager.
The former course is designed for anyone tasked with the fire safety management of a tall building with mixed use (ie residential/office/retail).
Developed back in 2004, the course has become a de facto competency requirement for many tall buildings in the UK and has been undertaken by 500 delegates to date.
The Tall Building Fire Safety Network is a fully approved training centre for Skills for Justice, while the course itself is recognised by the Institution of Fire Engineers. The five-day intensive programme covers all aspects of the management process. Each day is themed starting with prevention, going on to focus on fire detection and fire alarms, means of escape, fire containment and finishing with firefighting. Building fire Case Studies, along with the most common ignition hazards, are reviewed and analysed.
This course is ideal for tall building managers, supervisors, security managers, facility managers, Health and Safety managers, insurance surveyors, fire risk assessors, firefighters, fire and life safety system maintainers and, indeed, anyone who needs to understand a given building’s ‘fire strategy’.
In addition to 30 Continuing Professional Development hours, the learning outcomes include a Skills for Justice approved qualification that’s recognised by the Institution of Fire Engineers.
Managing fire safety
The training course centred on Fire Safety in Higher-Risk Buildings and the Role of the Building Safety Manager is designed for anyone tasked with fire safety management in higher-risk buildings or building safety managers working with the Building Safety Bill very much in mind.
Developed early last year, this course is a direct response to the learning needs and competency requirements of the aforementioned Building Safety Bill.
Several social housing providers have attended the training to date.
The five-day intensive programme covers all aspects of the Building Safety Bill fire safety management process. Each day is themed starting with prevention, going on to detection and alarm, means of escape, fire containment and finishing with firefighting. Building fire Case Studies, along with the most common ignition hazards, are reviewed and analysed.
Particular focus is given to the format and delivery of safety cases, tenant engagement strategies, the ‘golden thread’ and fire safety data management.
This course is ideal for anyone tasked with being a building safety manager including supervisors, security managers, facility managers, Health and Safety managers, insurance surveyors, fire risk assessors, firefighters, fire and life safety system maintainers and anyone who needs to understand the building ‘safety case’.
For both courses, delegates receive a comprehensive set of notes and documents that represent a significant learning resource for future use. The qualification available with the course requires the completion of a short test and delegate assignments to be completed after the training. Upon successful completion, delegates are issued with a Skills for Justice certificate.
