Howard Passey joins Board of Directors at BAFE Fire Safety Register

17 July 2023

THE BAFE Fire Safety Register has announced that Howard Passey, currently in the role of deputy managing director at the Fire Protection Association (FPA), is joining BAFE’s Board of Directors.

Passey has served the FPA since 1992 and worked in numerous roles during that tenure. Those positions have included training/information officer, principal consultant and, more recently, director of operations.

Prior to joining the FPA, Passey trained as a land surveyor and subsequently worked in the construction industry for an eight-year period. He boasts extensive experience of working in the FPA’s fire advisory division and is a respected and skilled fire risk assessor.

On the news of Passey’s confirmation that he would join BAFE’s Board of Directors, Dr Justin Maltby-Smith (Group managing director of the BAFE Fire Safety Register) explained: “Howard’s esteemed career, breadth of industry knowledge and core skills make him an important addition to BAFE’s Board of Directors. We’re thrilled that he has accepted our invitation to support BAFE in this position.”

Maltby-Smith continued: “We are in an important phase of developing our schemes, raising the bar on competency and also raising the profile of third party certification. Howard’s support and guidance alongside that of our other respected Board directors will be extremely welcome. We welcome Howard to the Board and look forward to working with him.”

Robust avenues

In response, Passey observed: “It was an easy decision to make when BAFE asked if I would be interested in joining the Board of Directors. BAFE has been operating for close to four decades now and, in more recent years, I’ve witnessed real improvements being made to its operation, the available competency schemes and engagement with the wider sector.”

Further, Passey explained: “I appreciate Justin’s comments and also look forward to working with him, chair Douglas Barnett and the other members of the Board to ensure robust avenues are available to the sector in terms of evidencing competence.”

In conclusion, Passey said: “This is a crucial time for the sector, and I hope that my engagement with the wider Board and members of the BAFE team will assist in steering decision-making that assists in achieving their goals and provide suitable guidance where and when it’s required.”
