The threat of a lithium-ion battery experiencing thermal runaway
01 April 2025
While the threat of a lithium-ion battery experiencing thermal runaway or catching fire is rare, these incidents do happen and their effects are often devastating.

Every stage of a lithium-ion battery’s lifecycle poses inherent risks which may result in thermal runaway, off-gasing, fire and even an explosion. These stages include when the battery is being manufactured, when it’s being used to collect energy within an energy storage system, when it’s being stored in a warehouse and even when it’s being recycled.
Each of these stages in the process presents its own unique risks and therefore requires its own unique solutions:
- Thermal Management - The only method proven to slow thermal runaway and reliably reduce the battery module’s temperature.
- Exhaust Ventilation - A malfunctioning battery will produce excessive and dangerous amounts of off-gas, so it’s essential to remove these gases and reduce the lower flammability limit in the enclosure.
- Early Warning Detection - May include sensitive gas detectors within an enclosure or thermal cameras or flame detectors outside of the enclosure, or a number of other methods of identifying irregularities.
- Fire Protection - While ineffective at slowing thermal runaway, gaseous agents are effective at combating battery fires and electrical fires that could reach battery modules if left unprotected.
- Explosion Protection - A series of explosion vents and exhaust vents may be recommended to protect against the worst-case scenario.
For these reasons, it’s important to choose a li-ion battery safety expert who understands the various steps of the battery’s lifecycle, is aware of the potential hazards that may be at risk, has the expertise and solutions to prevent or mitigate these hazards, and has a test facility to validate the required solutions.
