FireQual begins development of qualification for fire door installers
21 September 2021
FOLLOWING REQUESTS from industry and the work of the Competence Steering Group and Working Group 2 (Installers), FireQual is developing a qualification that will look to provide the underpinning knowledge and skills required by those who work within the area of fire door installation.

Reflecting on the core messages of the reports entitled ‘Building a Safer Future: Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety’ (May 2018) and ‘Setting the Bar’ (2020), FireQual – the specialist Awarding Body for the fire industry – will be looking at how the core practical competencies of individuals can be accurately and consistently assessed.
In view of FireQual’s aim of delivering industry-led qualifications, the organisation will be forming a development group made up of representatives from the sector and training organisations to establish qualifications that both meet the needs of industry and are deliverable across the UK.
Nic Preston, director of qualifications at FireQual, informed Fire Safety Matters: “During Fire Door Safety Week 2021, which runs from Monday 20 September until Sunday 26 September, we thought it would be pertinent to announce the development of this qualification. Fire doors form an important part of passive fire protection regimes, helping to protect escape routes, slowing the spread of fire and smoke and providing areas of relative safety.”
Preston added: “The provision of high-quality qualifications to support the development of the knowledge and skills of those technicians who install fire doors will assist in contributing towards an elevation of Best Practice within the fire safety sector.”
As part of this development work, FireQual is now actively requesting industry input. Any practising professional in the sector who would like to provide their thoughts for development group review should complete the survey which is to be found on the FireQual website: https://www.firequal.com/news/firequal-begins-development-of-fire-door-installation-qualification The survey should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.
