FirePro makes essential contribution to new fire safety set-up at Lloyds of London
04 March 2021
LLOYDS OF London, the historic British insurance institution operating in one of the most iconic buildings to characterise the capital’s skyline, has recently undergone a renewal of its fire safety systems. FirePro has played its part by supplying fire suppression agents.
Originally constructed back in 1986, the Lloyds building is renowned for its unique design in which, to maximise internal space, essential building services such as lifts and ducts are located on the outside of the structure.
The building itself is to be found on the former site of East India House in Lime Street where, not too far away in a Tower Street coffee house, Edward Lloyd originally founded the insurance market in circa 1686. Today, syndicates and managing agencies operating inside the landmark structure underwrite more than £35 billion of gross premiums on insurance risks throughout the world.
Following a review of building power control and distribution throughout the premises, and with due appreciation of its criticality, the Lloyds professional team selected and appointed ICW Powermode as specialist principal contractor to manage, overhaul and renew the existing switchgear and power distribution system which came with numerous logistical and planning challenges.
In particular, for the three critical switch rooms, besides completely new switchgear, the original pressurised gas fire suppression systems were reviewed. Following close consideration and evaluation, FirePro was selected as the replacement fire suppression agent. This formed part of the complete renewal of the fire detection and alarm system designed to protect the newly overhauled facilities.
Tony Hanley, managing director of FirePro UK, commented: “FirePro is a global product with numerous approvals and recognised as a suitable fire suppression agent for a number of risk types. In parallel with other projects of this nature, we were able to present the FirePro product and its distinct advantages to fully satisfy the close selection scrutiny necessarily exerted by the professional teams who selected us to contribute to this prestigious project.”
