FIA issues updated guidance on BS 7273-4:2015+A2:2023
31 March 2025
THE FIRE Industry Association (FIA) has published an updated version of its application guidance on BS 7273-4, now incorporating Amendment 2 released in 2023. This guidance actively supports professionals responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of fire safety systems that interface with door release mechanisms.

BS 7273-4:2015+A2:2023 sets out Best Practice for ensuring doors release reliably during a fire, helping to prevent the spread of smoke and flames, while also allowing safe evacuation.
The update clarifies the ‘critical signal path’ (ie the wiring or communication links between fire alarm systems and door release devices) and introduces additional detail on the use of acoustic and radio-actuated mechanisms, particularly so in relation to their suitability across different categories of actuation.
Amendment 2 brings more comprehensive explanations of when to use Critical (Category A), Standard (Category B) or Indirect (Category C) actuation, along with clearer guidance for risk assessments on individual doors. It also highlights the importance of careful commissioning, regular maintenance and the detailed testing of release mechanisms.
The document provides practical examples of typical connection methods, including common fire relays, I/O units and self-contained release systems, thereby ensuring that installers and specifiers can align their work with both BS 7273-4 and BS 5839-1 as necessary.
