Enhancing Fire Safety in the Education Sector
22 February 2024
CRAIG TAYLOR examines how systems integration not only facilitates the early detection of potential fire hazards, but also enables swift and co-ordinated responses, in turn minimising the risk of damage and ensuring the well-being of students and staff alike within the educational setting.
As part of the continual desire to create secure learning environments, the integration of cutting-edge technologies is becoming instrumental in terms of enhancing fire safety measures. Innovative solutions – including hybrid wireless fire detection systems designed to integrate traditional fire detection methods with wireless technology – mean that educational institutions can establish a more comprehensive and responsive approach to fire safety.
In schools, colleges and universities, it’s vitally important to maintain a conducive and uninterrupted learning environment. Any downtime can impact not only daily operations, but also the overall learning experience of students.
One of the foremost advantages of opting for a hybrid wireless fire detection system is the ease and speed of installation. The laying of fire-rated cabling for wired fire detection systems can be labour-intensive and disruptive. Hybrid wireless systems can significantly reduce installation times. There’s no need for drilling, fixing and laying of traditional fire cables, which allows schools and universities to maintain normal operations with minimal disturbance.
Educational institutions often engender dynamic environments with changing layouts and requirements. Hybrid wireless systems provide unmatched flexibility and adaptability to evolving needs. Whether it’s reconfiguring classrooms, introducing new facilities or accommodating outdoor classes, the wireless expandability of the system allows for easy adjustments without the constraints of physical wiring.
Enhanced coverage and precision
Hybrid wireless systems offer advanced features that ensure comprehensive coverage and precise detection. Thanks to their ability to interface with wired fire control panels through loop-powered translator modules, these systems can be strategically deployed to cover specific areas with varying levels of fire safety requirements. This is an essential requirement in educational institutions where diverse spaces, such as laboratories and libraries necessitate tailored fire detection solutions.
While the initial investment in a hybrid wireless fire detection system may be slightly higher than is the case for traditional wired alternatives, the long-term cost benefits are significant. The reduced installation and maintenance costs, coupled with the adaptability of the system to changes in the educational environment, render the hybrid wireless solution a cost-effective choice over the system’s lifecycle.
Hybrid wireless systems are designed to seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure. This means that schools, colleges and universities can upgrade their fire detection capabilities without the need for extensive retrofitting. This is particularly useful for extensions to older existing buildings or renovations to prestigious and/or historical educational facilities. Such integration ensures a smooth transition to advanced fire safety measures without causing disruptions to the overall operational structure.
Remote monitoring and management
When used in conjunction with an intelligent fire control panel, modern hybrid wireless fire detection systems can be remotely monitored and managed. This allows educational institutions and their security partners to monitor the system in real-time, receive alerts and even conduct system diagnostics remotely.
Such features contribute towards proactive fire safety management, enhancing overall preparedness and response capabilities as well as reducing the need for expensive call-outs of maintenance engineers.
The adoption of hybrid wireless fire detection systems in UK schools, colleges and universities offers a whole host of benefits, ranging from swift installation and adaptability to enhanced coverage and cost-effectiveness, which is of particular importance given the challenging financial environment experienced by today’s education sector.
As institutions prioritise the safety of their students and staff, the choice of a reliable and technologically advanced fire detection system should be a critical component of their overall fire safety strategy.
Case Study: Fred Nicholson School
Situated in Norfolk, the Fred Nicholson School caters to the unique educational needs of 162 pupils with Educational Health and Care Plans, addressing various learning difficulties and associated complex needs. This includes a provision for children requiring specialised Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) support.
The school boasts a personalised curriculum with high staff-to-pupil ratios, thereby ensuring a tailored learning experience aligned with individual needs. Additionally, the institution offers residential provision to further develop the life skills of specific pupils.
With the need to maintain a safe environment always at the forefront of the senior leadership team’s mind, especially so given the diverse needs of its students, the school recently underwent a comprehensive upgrade of its fire safety systems.
Following scheduled servicing, it became evident that the existing conventional and two-wire systems needed updating. TP Fire & Security was engaged for the design and installation of the new system. Hochiki Europe was selected for its reliability and the ease of installation offered by its diverse product ranges.
The upgrade necessitated L2 safety coverage across the entire school, while areas like dormitories required complete L1 coverage akin to the standards set for hospitals or hotels, inclusive of automatic fire detection.
Hochiki’s ESP addressable range – distinguished by its quality, reliability and a variety of intelligent products – was chosen to meet these requirements. This has included high-performance sensors, flexible input and output modules and an array of ancillaries, all the while catering to the bespoke and flexible design needed for a school environment.
Fire detection regime
Notably, the installation features Hochiki’s Ekho hybrid wireless fire detection range, which is specifically designed to interface with the main panel via a loop-powered translator module. This was crucial for accommodating mobile and outdoor classes within the school.
Given the sensitive nature of the educational setting, where students with learning difficulties and ASC are present, minimising disruption during installation was of utmost importance.
Kevin Harris (technical design manager at TP Fire & Security) has emphasised the pivotal role played by the flexibility and ease of installation of Hochiki products in the project's success.
“A big plus with Hochiki products,” stated Harris, “is how simple they are to install. It’s why they’ve become our go-to supplier for the past 20 years. Many other manufacturers only offer hardwire solutions. For locations such as schools and care homes, keeping the installation simple and reducing on-site time is a huge win as this helps to reduce the disruption for staff and day-to-day occupants.”
