Cygnus delivers fire safety solution for Elmwood Primary School
06 August 2023
WIRELESS FIRE detection and alarm systems developer Cygnus has worked alongside Blake Fire & Security Systems, the Southend-based installer, to supply 130 of its SmartNet wireless alarm systems to Elmwood Primary School in South Woodham Ferrers, thereby ensuring an optimal safety regime for members of staff and students alike.

The school’s management team contacted Blake Fire & Security Systems for a review and quotation of its site and existing fire alarm systems, which were over 15 years old and starting to fail.
“After discussing the options,” commented Rory Foster (fire safety systems manager at Blake Fire & Security Systems), “it was obvious to see the benefits of using a wireless system for this project. It helped that the cost of the wireless system was less than that of a wired system, due to the fact that it wouldn’t require any containment and cabling, while installation would be straightforward as the process only required one engineer.”
Foster continued: “The speed and ease of installation meant that we were able to install SmartNet in just four days during the May half-term break. We didn’t need to wait until the summer holiday period. The wireless system ensured that we didn’t need to penetrate the walls or ceilings. Running cables through walls and ceilings with a wired system would necessitate extra fire proofing to maintain the fire compartments of the building.”
Two-day lead time
Subsequent to the initial survey, the BS 5839 L2 system design was carried out by Blake Fire & Security’s National Security Inspectorate Gold fire detection and alarm systems designer just one week after confirmation of the works.
Cygnus was able to provide the necessary products for the project with only a two-day lead time, which meant that all equipment was in the office and ready to be programmed before going to site the following week.
Patented technology
Designed to deliver a reliable and safe solution, the SmartNet wireless network features patented Cygnus technology and is run by battery-powered radio devices as part of a robust, self-forming and self-healing mesh network. The system realises a minimum of two communication paths to each wireless device for maximum reliability.
Rory Foster concluded: “Following the installation of the SmartNet wireless fire alarm, the management team at Elmwood Primary School was very impressed with how good the system looks and how easily and professionally it was installed. We would highly recommend the Cygnus system to all sorts of premises due to its reliability, the ease and speed of installation and its user-friendly functionality.”
