Plumis wins leading innovation award for Automist fire suppression system
19 February 2021
FIRE SAFETY solutions developer Plumis has been honoured with a major national award. The British engineering firm, whose clients include a range of local authorities and housing associations, won the Innovation of the Year category at the national finals of the Make UK Manufacturing Awards.

These annual awards recognise the creativity, dedication and resilience of manufacturers that have done exceptional work to provide better solutions in their sector. Judges praised London-based Plumis for its “reinvention” of the traditional fire safety sprinkler and the organisation’s growth realised through developing solutions designed to meet the needs of new markets.
Since its formation in 2008, Plumis has developed its domestic fire suppression misting technology Automist to be an effective and easy-to-fit alternative to conventional fire sprinkler systems.
Judges for the Make UK Manufacturing Awards said: “Plumis is an innovative British engineering company that has shown impressive revenue growth as a result of its life-saving product and its customer base looks set to expand. The business deserves the greatest praise for the progress it’s making.”
William Makant, CEO and co-founder of Plumis, told Fire Safety Matters: “Winning this national award is testament to our team’s hard work and commitment to taking a fresh approach to addressing the challenges of keeping people safe from fire in their homes. We formed Plumis with the aim of creating a more effective alternative to traditional fire sprinkler systems and we’ll continue to innovate as we evolve our products still further.”
Jim Davison, regional director for Make UK in the South, added: “I must congratulate Plumis on winning this award and for the significant and innovative steps the business has taken. It’s clear the company has prioritised R&D and is now seeing the benefits of doing so. Companies like Plumis really are trailblazers for the sector and the hope is that other manufacturers take a leaf out of their book.”
The Make UK Manufacturing Awards were sponsored by High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a group of UK manufacturing research centres. Dick Elsy CBE, the sponsor’s CEO, commented: “We’re proud to sponsor these awards and recognise the achievements of extraordinary innovators such as Plumis. Companies that grasp the innovation opportunity are among the most competitive and productive in global markets. That’s why innovation is the lifeblood of the UK’s economy.”
Plumis has won numerous awards in days gone by, including the Red Dot Design Award and also the highly prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.
