Lifetime Contribution Award bestowed upon Promat’s Nigel Morrey

26 January 2025

PROMAT’S TECHNICAL director Nigel Morrey has been recognised by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) with a Lifetime Contribution Award for his commitment to the fire safety sector.

Recognising over three decades of tireless work to improve standards in the passive fire protection domain and raise awareness of the importance of this in protecting buildings and the occupants within, the ASFP bestowed this great honour at the organisation’s recent 2024 Passive Fire Protection Awards.

In his role as technical director at passive fire protection systems manufacturer Promat, Morrey has taken a leading position in the development and testing of passive fire protection systems over the past 22 years, including keen support for the drive towards improved standards when it comes to built-in fire safety.

A passionate advocate for improved fire safety, Morrey has served as both chair and vice-chair of the ASFP, as well as being a member of its Council and Strategy Groups. He has also represented the organisation on Expert Panel D: Passive Fire Protection at the Loss Prevention Certification Board.

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in June 2017, Morrey was invited to chair the Finishes and Interiors Sector’s Fire Safety Group and, indeed, was a director of the Finishes and Interiors Sector for a number of key years.

In his role at Promat, Morrey has led a drive to both improve upon and demonstrate competency right across all aspects of the company in order to highlight the importance of knowledge and experience in supporting the accurate specification and installation of passive fire protection.

This has included introducing training initiatives for all members of staff and ensuring that all customer-facing personnel have passed (or are working towards) the Institution of Fire Engineers’ Level 3 qualification in passive fire protection.

Commitment to raising awareness

In presenting Morrey with the Lifetime Contribution Award, the ASFP has duly highlighted his commitment to improving standards in fire protection.

ASFP managing director Mike Ward explained: “Innovation and promoting the highest standards in fire safety are integral to everything the ASFP stands for and Nigel truly embodies that ethic.”

Ward continued: “He has shown commitment to pushing for higher standards across the fire safety industry as a whole, but also in terms of raising awareness of fire safety and building that into construction and the supply chain as a whole. This award is richly deserved for Nigel’s tireless commitment to keeping fire safety at the top of the agenda.”

Morrey responded: “Receiving this award is a real privilege in an industry, and from an organisation, that works so hard to ensure that fire safety is a priority in all forms of construction.”

He went on to state: “The ASFP does a fantastic job of promoting the work of the passive fire protection industry and it has been an honour to be able to work so closely with the organisation over the last two decades.”

In conclusion, Morrey observed: “As a direct result of the great tragedy at Grenfell Tower, the industry has recently witnessed major change. Now, it’s vital we continue to ensure life-saving fire protection systems are subject to the highest possible standards and that the awareness is there of the need for the correct specification and installation of passive fire protection systems.”
