Fire door safety maintained at West Lothian schools by Yeoman Shield

28 February 2023

THE DEANS Community High School and the Armadale Academy, both of which are administered by West Lothian Council, are maintained by Bellrock Group under a contractual PPP3 project agreement. Taking on the maintenance management tasks for the two school buildings places the Bellrock management team as the ‘Responsible Person’ when it comes to compliance with fire safety maintenance, which of course incorporates fire-rated door sets.

When the time arrived to assess and protect the condition of the schools’ fire doors with an impact protection system, Martin Igoe (senior facilities manager for Bellrock) decided to engage with Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services.

As the brand name of Harrison Thompson & Co. Ltd, itself a registered FIRAS Warringtonfire (a UKAS-accredited scheme for fire door and passive fire resisting products installation) company, Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services was able to undertake a conformity survey of the door sets in both schools.

In practice, this survey consisted of an assessment of the condition of the fire doors, noting any remedial work required to improve the doors’ functionality and the replacement of doors where required, as well as noting advisory door protection products that could improve the look and condition – and extend the life cycle – of the doors by solving any impact damage-related problems.

Simultaneous working

After an itemised quotation for the work had been raised and accepted, Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services’ directly employed fixing operatives to conduct the work simultaneously at both school sites in accordance with Bellrock’s designated programme.

Remedial work was carried out on frames and the fire doors in general. Replacement doors were added in addition to Yeoman Shield fire-rated protection products, among them door protection panels, door edge protectors and PVCu-clad glazing beads. The products were fitted by accredited teams following Best Practice guidance.

Further collaboration

Martin Igoe commented: “Having previously used Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services on school projects in Aberdeenshire, I was more than happy to once again collaborate with the company for work at the Deans Community High School and the Armadale Academy.”

Igoe continued: “The company’s door protection products are great. Not only has Yeoman Shield Fire Door Services re-certified the old fire doors for conformity, but the business has extended the life of the doors by fitting a hard-wearing cladding to each. This renders them more durable for the rigours of everyday school life.”

Further phases of the fire door work have been scheduled for later in the year.
