Darren Ellis appointed qualifications manager at FireQual

10 June 2024

FIREQUAL, THE specialist Awarding Organisation for the fire safety sector, has announced the appointment of Darren Ellis in the role of qualifications manager. Ellis is a well-known expert within the regulatory and qualifications development sectors having amassed over 15 years’ worth of teaching and training experience at the national and international levels.

Most recently, Ellis has supported the creation of the Military Qualifications Centre in Abu Dhabi to provide qualifications for the United Arab Emirates’ Safety, Defence and Emergency and Crisis Management sectors.

Prior to that, Ellis worked with the Institution of Fire Engineers in the role of qualifications, compliance and assessment manager.

Ellis also brings a wealth of knowledge from nine years spent within the regulation-focused education domain, having worked with Ofqual and later helping to embed the (then) new Welsh regulator, Qualifications Wales, on supporting the development of the regulatory requirements of Awarding Organisations (namely the ‘Standard Conditions of Recognition’).

Supporting strategic aims

Commenting on his appointment, Ellis informed Fire Safety Matters: “I’m excited and eager to be part of FireQual and to use my expertise and experience to support its strategic aim of maintaining safety within the fire industry. With much change on the horizon and growth across the sector, I will continue to work with our established and valued stakeholders to ensure FireQual’s qualifications remain fit for purpose and hold real currency.”

Dr Justin Maltby-Smith, Group managing director of BAFE and FireQual, stated: “Darren’s skills, knowledge and experience will support the aspirations of FireQual, among them the ongoing development and growth of both new and existing qualifications. We are on the cusp of change within the industry. FireQual is confident that regulated qualifications will become part of the growing requirements to demonstrate knowledge in order to work within the life safety industry. His support during this time shall be extremely valuable and we welcome him to the team.”

Maltby-Smith concluded: “Darren will be joining us at the BAFE Conference, which takes place on 12 June at the CBS Arena in Coventry alongside Fire Safety Matters Live. We encourage practitioners who’ve not yet done so to register, attend, meet Darren and the team and discuss regulated qualifications. On the day, FireQual Board member Jim Fitzpatrick will be speaking on the topic of regulated qualifications.”
